Respectfully returned to the President, Tennessee Board of Pension Examiners,
Nashville. The records show that one JAMES HERNDON, not borne as J. P. HERNDON,
Private Capt. Phillip's Company, Tennessee Light Artillery, enlisted
October 15, 1861. On muster roll for SEPT. & OCT. 1863, (last roll on file)
he is shown present. No record of his capture, parole or later service has been
found. The above organization was also known as CAPT. ELDRIDGE'S, CAPT. WRIGHT'S
& CAPT. MEBANE'S CO., L. ART'Y.
I, J.P. HERNDON a native of the State of Tennessee and now a citizen of Tennessee,
resident at 2107 JONES AVE. NASHVILLE , in the County of DAVIDSON in said State of
Tennessee and who was a soldier from the state of Tennessee , in the war between
the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under the Act
of the General Assembly of Tennessee. …And I do solemnly swear that while in the
discharge of my duty in the services of the Confederate or United States as a member
of THE JOHNSON ARTILERY, ELDRIDGES BATTERY FIRST CAPTAIN, NEXT CAPTAIN WAS WRIGHT
HE WAS KILLED AT MURFREESBORO, NEXT CAPTAIN WAS MEBANE, HE WAS KILLED,
NEXT WAS PHILLIPS.

HENDERSON COUNTY TENNESSEE SEPTEMBER SIXTH 1843.
When did you enlist and in what command?
ABOUT THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER 1861. ELDRIDGES BATTERY, WRIGHT, PHILLIPS, MEBANE,
GRANT WRIGHT, LIET. E. TAYLOR AND OTHERS.
In what battle or battles were you engaged, and, if not wounded, state what
disabilities did you receive, if any?
CHICKAMAUGA, MISSIONARY RIDGE, RISOCA DOLLAS, ATLANTA AND ON THROUGH THE GEORGIA
CAMPAIGN. FRANKLIN, NASHVILLE THEN TO MOBILE. THERE I WAS WOUNDED.
What was the precise nature of your wound or disability?
A PIECE OF SHELL HIT ME ON THE SIDE. IT WAS NOT VERY SERIOUS BUT I WAS SENT TO THE
HOSPITAL AT LAUDERDALE SPRINGS MISS. WAS THERE PROBRABLY A MONTH OR MORE.
Were you incapacitated for service by reason of said wound or disability incurred?
NO ONLY WHILE I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL.
Were you discharged from the army by reason of said wound or disability? NO
If discharged from the Army, where were you and what did you do until the close
of the war? I WENT FROM THE HOSPITAL TO THE COMPANY CAMPED AT MERIDIAN MISS.
WE WAS THERE AT THE CLOSE OF THE WAR.
What was the name of the surgeon who attended you? I DONT KNOW.
How did you get out of the army, when and where?
WE WERE CALLED IN LINE AND TOLD THE WAR WAS OVER AND WE COULD GO HOME.
THIS WAS AT MERIDIAN MISS. APRIL 1865.
Were you ever in prison? If so, state what prison and when released.
YES. I WAS SICK IN THE HOSPITAL AT NASHVILLE WHEN THE FEDERALS TOOK POSESSION.
Were you paroled? If so, when and where?
I SUPPOSE SO. IN THE HOSPITAL AT NASHVILLE TENN BY THE FEDERALS IN MAY 1862
Did you take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government?
I DONT KNOW WHAT WAS SAID OR DONE BUT I CAME HOME VERY WEAK.
Have you applied for pension before this? NO
Are you married or have you been married?
HAVE BEEN MARRIED ONCE. MY WIFE DIED APRIL 29, 1887.
If so what is the size of your family living together? I LIVE WITH MY SON.
What are the respected ages of your wife and the children living with you? (blank)
To what sex do your children belong? ONE SON AND ONE DAUGHTER
In what business are you now engaged, if any, and what do you earn? NONE

cash value? 100 ACRES LAND ABOUT $90.00 PER ACRE WITH A LEAN OF $40.00 PER ACRE.

NONE

SOME YEARS TAKES ALL WE HAVE TO PAY TAXES AND DEED ON LOAN. WE SOME TIMES RENT OUT
TO $100.00 TO $200.00 PE YEAR.
How have you derived support for yourself and family for the last five years?
I LIVE WITH MY SON. HE ATTENDS TO THE RENTING AND <-spelling-> PAYING ALL EXPENCES
AND GIVES ME WHAT I HAVE.
Do you use intoxicants to any extent? NO

SINCE SEPT. 6, 1843
